Women's Hoops Claims Sole Possession of 4th Place in CAC Standings

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team took another big step to hosting the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 75-57 victory over visiting St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Saints move into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Seahawks with the series sweep.

Four Saints (9-12, 6-6 CAC) scored in double-figures led by Katelyn Fischer with a game-high 18 points. She nearly logged a triple-double, adding 11 rebounds to go with eight assists.

Also in double-figures were Sam Spencer with 15 points, Tynisha Parks with 14 and Dominique Dickens with 13. Parks joined Fischer with a double-double, adding 14 board in the victory.

Marymount dominated the Seahawks (8-14, 6-7 CAC) down low, both in the paint and on the glass. The Saints outscored St. Mary's 28-16 in the paint and outrebounded their guests 41-35 on the day.

Trading leads with SMC through the first 12 minutes of action, Marymount took a 17-16 lead at the 7:43 mark on a Parks jumper and never looked back. The Saints pushed their lead to 10 to close out the half up 33-23 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Spencer.

In the second frame, a 12-0 run to open the half gave MU a 45-23 lead after just three minutes of action. St. Mary's would slowly chip away at its deficit and eventually pulled within six at 58-52 with six minutes to play. Clamping down, another 12-0 run by the Blue and White squashed any hopes of an SMC comeback.

Raven Owens was the lone Seahawk in double-figures with 10 points.

Marymount returns to the hardwood on Wednesday at it hosts Wesley in CAC action. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.marymount.edu/athletics/wBasketball and selecting the "live stats" and "live video" links.
