Women's Soccer Edged by CAC Rival

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's soccer team narrowly lost a 3-2 decision to Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. The Saints fall to 5-6 overall and 0-5 in league play.

With all five goals coming in the first half, Marymount struck early first. Katie Hamelin tore through the left side of the Eagles defense and fired a shot past the UMW keeper at the 6:59 mark. Hamelin's goal was the 17th over her career and put her in sole possession of 11th place on the all-time leaderboard at Marymount.

The Eagles (10-1-2, 2-1-2 CAC) answered back behind the play of Jessica Bednarcik, who would notch a hat-trick in a span of less than seven minutes. She knotted the game up in the 12th minute, added another goal at the 16:59 mark and yet another 45 seconds later.

Looking to respond, the Saints cut the deficit to just one in the 22nd minute after Melissa Fessenden took a pass from Danni Bankins and found the back of the net to make it 3-2.

Neither team would score the rest of the way despite UMW outshooting the Saints 26-8 in the game. Victoria Wyand hauled in seven saves off the bench and didn't allow a goal in just over 68 minutes of action.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face former CAC foe Gallaudet on Wednesday.
