ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount University women's tennis student-athlete Renee Schmidt has been named the recipient of the 2025-26 Atlantic East Conference Medal of Inspiration, an award that recognizes individuals who have overcome significant adversity while exemplifying perseverance, courage, and determination.

Schmidt's journey back to collegiate competition is a testament to resilience. In 2020, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) a connective tissue disorder that caused cervical instability, brain stem compression, and partial paralysis. The diagnosis forced Schmidt to step away from both school and the sport she loved as she focused on her health. Following her diagnosis, Schmidt underwent a life-changing surgery to fuse her skull to her spine. During the procedure, surgeons removed part of her skull. She spent a month confined to bed before beginning an intensive rehabilitation process. After three months of physical therapy, Schmidt took the remarkable step of learning to walk again.

Her journey continued in 2023 when she underwent another major surgery, receiving a metal plate at the base of her spine to help alleviate pain and address the effects of partial paralysis. Despite years of medical challenges, Schmidt never lost sight of her goal of returning to the tennis court. In the spring of 2026, the NCAA granted Schmidt a one-semester extension of eligibility, giving her the opportunity to compete once again. On March 8, 2026, she completed her long-awaited return by playing her first NCAA women's singles and doubles matches since her diagnosis.

Schmidt made the most of her opportunity throughout the season, recording two singles victories and four doubles wins. Among her highlights were singles and doubles victories against Atlantic East Conference opponents Immaculata and Neumann, contributing to the Saints' success while serving as an inspiration to teammates, opponents, and the entire conference.

The Atlantic East Conference Medal of Inspiration honors individuals whose stories extend far beyond wins and losses, recognizing those who demonstrate extraordinary courage in the face of adversity. Schmidt's perseverance through multiple surgeries, extensive rehabilitation, and years away from competition embodies the spirit of the award.

Her return to collegiate tennis stands as a powerful reminder that determination and resilience can overcome even the most daunting obstacles, making her a deserving recipient of the 2025-26 Atlantic East Conference Medal of Inspiration.
