Marymount Athletics Announces Latest Hall of Fame Class

10/8/2024 3:00:00 PM

ARLINGTON – The Marymount University Athletics Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce its Induction Class of 2024, a select group of student-athletes that will be recognized on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

This year's class includes Kevin Conklin (Men's Lacrosse, Class of 2009), Katelyn Fischer (Women's Basketball, Class of 2014), Zak Sherlund (Men's Soccer, Class of 2001), Ashley Smith (Women's Swimming, Class of 2009), and the 1999-2000 men's basketball team.

The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 PM at Washington Golf & Country Club with honorees also being introduced during the home basketball doubleheader against Immaculata the following day on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip-off for the women's matchup is scheduled for 2 PM with the men's game to follow at 4 PM. To register for the celebration, click here

Conklin was the 2006 CAC Rookie of the Year after scoring 37 goals and adding 17 assists. The two-time CAC All-Academic honoree was also a three-time Second Team All-Conference selection to close out his career. He is one of just five Saints to be named All-Conference at least three times. He graduated second all-time in points (167) and assists (58) and now stands third in both categories 15 years after graduation.

Fischer enters the Marymount Athletics Hall of Fame in her first year on the ballot after a remarkable career that culminated in the prestigious Jostens Trophy as a senior. Her list of accolades is long and includes being the only three-time WBCA All-American in program history. She was named the Player of the Year for the state of Virginia three times and was the CAC Player of the Year twice. Off the court, she was a two-time First Team Academic All-American and was the 2014 CAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. After just three years of action for the Saints, Fischer made her mark on the Marymount women's basketball record book and is still the leader in all-time 3-point field goal percentage (40.6) and single-game free throws (16). The 1,000-point scorer is also top five all-time in assists (487), 3-point field goals (166), free throws (376), and free-throw percentage (82.6). She led the Saints to the 2013 CAC championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sherlund was named Honorable Mention All-State as a junior in 1999 after leading the Saints with 27 points (10 goals, seven assists). He led the conference in scoring that season, as well. He was also a Second Team All-Conference selection in 2000. Upon graduating, Sherlund held school records in goals (24), assists (12), and points (60) before being overtaken by Hall of Famer Justin Kessler in the mid-2000s and current MU senior Leonardo Torres. The 1999 and 2000 teams were two of the best teams in program history as the Saints reached the CAC semifinals.

Smith ended her career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of Marymount women's swimming. The 2008 CAC Female Swimmer of the Year won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the CAC Championships to earn First Team All-Conference in both events. Smith also set school records in both events, which stood for eight years (100 breast) and 10 years (200 breast). She was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay program record, which still stands today. Smith also earned Second Team All-Conference laurels twice in 2009 and was a four-time CAC All-Academic honoree.

The final induction this year is the 1999-00 men's basketball team, a fitting selection on the 25th anniversary of the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Coached by Chuck Driesell, Marymount won the CAC championship as the No. 3 seed, defeating Goucher 70-46 in the final hosted in Arlington at the then-brand new Bell Atlantic Arena (now Converse Family Fieldhouse). The Saints fell in overtime to Roanoke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to finish the season with a 16-12 record. Marymount was led by First Team All-Conference selection and Hall of Famer Dallas Crawley, Hall of Famer Andre Coles, Second Team All-Conference selection Henock Berhanu, and CAC Rookie of the Year Bert Rueger.
