ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams swept Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet to round out the regular season before the CAC Championships in February.
Men's Swimming
The Saints notched another CAC victory against Frostburg, 116-87. The men's squad got off to a good start, registering first and second in the 200-yard medley relay, with times of 1:40.03 and 1:48.06, respectively.
This spring the NCAA will recognize the 100-yard IM for the first time at the NCAA Championships, and Saturday was the first time the Saints competed in the event. Sophomore Trey Brown set Marymount's first program record in the 100-yard IM, after touching the wall at 56.84.
The men's intensity continued as freshman Nicholas DiSanti picked up a first-place finish in the 1000-yard free (10.53.85). Freshman Zachary Payne continued the streak, registering a first-place finish in the 200-yard free, after touching the wall at 1:52.80. In event eight, senior Tyler Hayes clenched another top-place finish in the 50-yard free (21.79), while senior James Gibbons touched the wall at 54.75, to notch a first-place finish in the 100-yard fly. Sophomore Ian Griffith took first in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:14.90, just ahead of the competition.
Women's Swimming
The women's squad conquered the Bobcats, 112-91. In the first event of the meet, Marymount snagged a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (2:01.30).
Junior Morgan Alston had a strong showing throughout the meet. Alston notched a top-place finish in the 100-yard IM (1:01.55) and her time will stand as a new program record for Marymount, as the NCAA recognizes the event at the NCAA Championships for the first time in 2017. Alston later notched a first-place finish in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:01.72. After touching the wall at 1:09.80, Alston earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard breast, good enough to move into fourth on the program's all-time top-10 list.
Sophomore Taylor Plumley pieced together an impressive performance on the day. Plumley recorded a top-place finish in the 1000-yard free (11:36.75) and 500-yard free (5:39.66).
Freshman Hayley Elizondo also grabbed a top-place finish for the Saints in the 200-yard free (2:01.58), good enough to join the program's all-time top-10 list. Sophomore Claire Cassidy bolstered a first-place finish in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:03.85, two seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Both squads will head to the CAC Championships on Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 19.
