ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming squads battled Division I Howard University in a dual meet on Friday night in the Rose Bente Lee Center. The women snuck by the Bison, 105-100, while the men fell short, 116-88.
Men's Swimming
Freshman Zachary Payne notched the first top-place finish for the men in the 200-yard free (1:49.59). Payne later bolstered a second-place finish in the 500-yard free (5:01.91), earning him a spot on the program's all-time record list.
Senior Tyler Hayes outlasted the competition to snag a first-place finish in the 50-yard free after touching the wall at 21.79, while fellow senior William Bryan rounded out individual competition with a top-place finish in the 100-yard breast (59.95).
In the 100-yard fly, senior James Gibbons garnered a second-place finish with a time of 54.25. Sophomore Isaiah Jones finished second in the 100-yard free, after touching the wall at 49.72.
The men topped off the evening snagging a first-place finish in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:28.07. Freshman
Trey Brown, Jones, Gibbons, and Hayes combined their efforts to snag the victory.
Women's Swimming
Freshman Hayley Elizondo continues to perform well in the pool, earning a top-place finish in the 200-yard free with a time of 2:00.07, good enough to place sixth on the program's all-time record list. Elizondo also bolstered a second-place finish in the 100-yard free with a time of 55.84. The freshman who earned her first collegiate CAC Swimmer of the Week this past week wasn't finished, as she went on to take first in the 100-yard breast after touching the wall at 1:09.37, just a second shy of setting a new program record for Marymount.
Sophomore Taylor Plumley was the first for the Saints with a top-place finish in the 1000-yard free, touching the wall at 11:42.75. Plumley came through once again in the 500-yard free, notching a top-place finish with a time of 5:34.76.
Junior Morgan Alston continued her impressive campaign this season with a top-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:16.15). The top-place finish for Alston pushed the Saints ahead of the Bison 49-44, shifting the momentum in favor of the blue and white. Alston later added a second-place finish in the 100-yard fly (1:02.05).
The Bison recovered momentarily until the 500-yard free when the Saints took the top-two spots to pull ahead by seven, 88-81. MU was able to maintain its lead through the remainder of the meet.
Both squads will travel to York College of Pennsylvania for a Capital Athletic Conference with the Spartans and a matchup with Washington and Lee University on Saturday, January 21. First race is set for 1 p.m.
