ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.— The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams traveled on the road to open up the 2016-17 campaign against St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon, both notching victories.
Men's Team
The men's squad came out on top of the Capital Athletic Conference matchup, 112-93, over St. Mary's. Leading the way was freshman Zachary Payne who earned a top-place finish in the 200-yard free (1:50.94) and the 500-yard free (5:08.36). Payne was less than a second shy of joining the program's all-time top-ten 200-yard free list in his collegiate career debut.
Senior Tyler Hayes finished first in the 50-yard free and second in the 100-yard free after touching the wall at 21.89 and 50.67, respectively. In the 200-yard IM, freshman Tedd Pham took first in 2:05.83 and third in the 200-yard back (2:18.96). Sophomore Isaiah Jones touched the wall at 49.96 in the 100-yard free to place first and took second in the 50-yard free (22.34).
Also placing in the top three of their respective events were seniors William Bryan, Robert Klazynski, Wes Wilson, James Gibbons, junior Shaka Kuykendall, sophomore Jonathon Mobley, and freshmen Scott Bockisch and Nicholas DiSanti.
Women's Team
The women's team also defeated the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon, 117-84. The squad opened up with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay after touching the wall at 4:12.32. Senior Kassidy Schmidt, junior Morgan Alston, and freshmen Jessica Bricker and Hayley Elizondo were all members of the relay squad.
Elizondo placed first in the 200-yard breast (2:34.81) and the 200-yard IM (2:16.04) to lead the Saints. Elizondo's first-place finish in the 200-yard IM places her eighth on the program's all-time record list. Bricker finished in first for the 100-yard free and second in the 200-yard free after touching the wall at 57.44 and 2:02.64, respectively.
Alston claimed a top-place finish in the 200-yard back (2:18.01) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:17.06). Sophomore Taylor Plumley snagged a top-place finish in the 500-yard free after touching the wall at 5:42.43 and a second-place finish in the 1000-yard free (11:35.04). Also bringing in a first-place finish was sophomore Claire Cassidy in the 200-yard fly (2:22.01) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard back (2:21.97).
The women had several swimmers place in the top three of their respective events, including junior Marisol Rivera and freshmen Grace Lesce and Grace Donovan.
Both squads will continue on the road to face Gallaudet University on Friday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
