FROSTBURG, Md.—The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams traveled to Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup, seeing both teams cruise past the Bobcats. The men's team moved to 3-5 overall this season, while the women moved to 4-4.
Men's Swimming
The men's squad overpowered the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon with a 158-98 decision. Marymount had 5 different swimmers claim a first-place finish in their respective events.
Junior James Gibbons led the Saints with two first-place individual finishes and was a member of the 200-meter free relay team and the 200-meter medley relay team that also took first. Gibbons touched the wall at 25.46 to take first in the 50-meter freestyle and touched the wall at 27.59 in the 50-meter butterfly for first. Sophomore Ross Wiley took first in the 50-meter backstroke (29.35) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:02.86). Wiley took second in the 100-meter IM (1:04.46) and contributed to the 200-meter medley relay team as well.
Junior Wes Wilson also claimed a first-place tally, in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:04.60. Junior Tyler Hayes touched the wall at 2:13.47 to take first in the 200-meter freestyle. Hayes also contributed with 200-meter medley relay team and the 200-meter freestyle relay team. Freshman Isaiah Jones claimed the last top-place finish for the Saints, in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 56.91. Jones also swam in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
The Saints started and finished on top with first-place finishes in the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay. Wiley, Gibbons, Hayes and freshman Trey Brown combined for a time of 1:53.35. Hayes, Gibbons, Jones, and junior Robert Klazynski touched the wall at 1:40.29 to take first in the 200-meter freestyle to close out the day.
Women's Swimming
The women's squad managed to hold off the Bobcats, finishing on top, 147-114. The Saints had several swimmers finish in the top two spots of their respective events.
Sophomore Morgan Alston led the Saints on the afternoon after taking two top-place finishes and a second-place finish. Alston took first in the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter backstroke after touching the wall at 1:12.28 and 1:12.67, respectively. Alston took second in the 100-meter IM with a time of 1:12.29 and was a member of the top finishing 200-meter freestyle relay team.
Senior Taylor Hood also pieced together an impressive performance for the Saints after taking first in the 50-meter butterfly (32.33) and the 50-meter backstroke (33.19). Hood also competed as part of the 200-meter freestyle relay and the 200-meter medley relay teams that took first and second-place respectively. Sophomore Marisol Rivera took the other first-place finish for the Saints in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 10:42.06.
Senior Jessica Hester took second in three different events, finishing the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:06.81, the 50-meter breaststroke at 38.39, and the 400-meter freestyle at 5:15.26. Hester was also a member of the 200-meter medley relay team that took second. Freshman Taylor Plumley finished second in the 200-meter freestyle after touching the wall at 2:22.10. Junior Allison McDermott took second in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:32.35.
The women started and finished strong on the day taking a top two finish in both relay events. In the 200-meter medley relay, the team took second after touching the wall at 2:15.43. Hester, Hood, freshman Claire Cassidy, and junior Kassidy Schmidt all contributed in the relay. In the 200-meter freestyle, Alston, Hood, sophomore Kristen Kilroy, and junior Hanna Del Signore combined for a time of 2:01.15 to claim first place.
The men and women's swimming teams will be back at home on January 31 to host the Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania for their final meet of the regular season. Marymount will also honor its seniors on during the event. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
