FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams hit the road for another meet on Saturday, traveling down 95 to faceoff against Capital Athletic Conference opponent, University of Mary Washington, and falling to the reigning league champions.
Men's Swimming
The men's squad moves to 1-2 for the season after a 177-60 decision on Saturday against the Eagles. Junior Tyler Hayes pieced together another strong performance, collecting the Saints lone victory in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.98 for nine points. Hayes also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (50.67), bring his individual points to 11 for the day, while he teamed up with other Saints for two second-place tallies in relay events for eight more points.
Of the two relays, the day started off with the 200-yard medley relay resulting in a second-place finish for a team consisting of senior Matt Essig, junior William Bryan, freshman Ian Griffith, and Hayes. With the 1:43.87, the squad registered four points for MU.
The same way the day opened is the way the Saints finished, with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, seeing Hayes, Bryan, freshman Isaiah Jones, and junior James Gibbons piece together a time of 1:28.76 for four more points.
Essig also had quite a day in his individual events, totaling nine points through three races. His best finish was in the 200-yard freestyle, grabbing second place in a time of 1:51.73 for four points. He followed it up with fourth place in the 500 freestyle (5:16.13) and third place in the 200 IM (2:09.94).
Women's Swimming
The women's squad fell for the first time this season, moving their overall record to 2-1 for the year, after a 192-69 decision to UMW. Sophomore Morgan Alston led the Saints for the day with 11 points in her three individual events, placing in the top three in each.
Alston opened her day with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.96) for three points, before grabbing second place in her final two events for four points apiece. In the 100-yard butterfly, she just missed a top finish coming in less than half a second behind the first-place racer for a time of 1:00.07. Alston ended the day in the 200-yard IM, again just missing first place by less than a second on a time of 2:15.38.
Freshmen Taylor Plumley and Claire Cassidy and seniors Taylor Hood and Jessica Hester all registered second-place finishes as well in one of their events through the afternoon. Plumley swam for a time of 11:26.18 in the long-distance 1000-yard freestyle for four points, while Cassidy collected hers in the 200-yard butterfly for four points (2:23.12).
Hood came through for four points in the 50-yard freestyle (26.70), and Hester rounded out the group in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:35.92 for four points as well.
Both teams will have a two-week stretch to prepare for their first home meet on Friday, November 20, as the Saints welcome Gallaudet University to the Rose Bente Lee Center for a 6 p.m., start.
