ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams opened up at home for the first time this season on Friday night, facing the Bison of Gallaudet University. Both teams sealed up victories with the women finishing on top, 126-68, and the men collecting a 111-41 decision.
Men's Swimming
Senior Matt Essig, who finished on top in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, led the men's squad. In the 50-yard freestyle, Essig clinched the win by less than a second with a time of 23.10 seconds. Essig finished the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.30 seconds.
Freshman James Augustino also pieced together an impressive performance, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle and was a member of the 200-yard medley and freestyle relay team that also placed first. Augustino dominated the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.69.
Sophomore Shaka Kuykendall, juniors Robert Klazynski and James Gibbons and freshman Isaiah Jones took first place in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard freestyle, respectively. Kuykendall was closely trailed by Jones, but managed to stay ahead in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.25. Klazynski finished first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.19. Gibbons finished the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55:92 seconds. Jones finished the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.30.
The men also took first place in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior Wes Wilson, freshman Ian Griffith, Augustino, and Kuykendall combined for a time of 1:44.91 to win the 200-yard medley. Freshman Jonathon Mobley, Augustino, Wilson, and Kuykendall finished the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 5:21.69, good enough to win by more than a minute.
Women's Swimming
The women's team had six individual top-place finishes and a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley. Senior Taylor Hood, sophomore Morgan Alston, and freshman Katharina David led the Saints. David set a new Marymount record for the women's team in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.19, and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that placed first. Hood finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.78, and was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team. Alston was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team and finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.50, two seconds ahead of junior Allison McDermott.
Also finishing first for the Saints were senior Lauren Funk and freshmen Delaney Rodgers and Anastasia DeMaso. Funk took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:04.83. Rodgers came out on top in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.69. DeMaso dominated the field in the 200-yard freestyle beating the second-place finisher by more than 10 seconds with a time of 2:15.43.
The 200-medley relay team finished first with combined times from senior Jessica Hester, Alston, Hood, and David, touching the wall in a time of 1:57.26.
Both teams will head back on the road on Saturday, November 21 to Ashland, Virginia to face Randolph-Macon College. First heat is set for 1 p.m.
