DOVER, Del. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team remained perfect in Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday night, topping Wesley College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-17).
The Saints earn their fifth victory in league play with one left to play in the regular season, having yet to drop a single set. They currently sit a perfect 15-0 in sets against AEC opponents in 2019.
The first set started out slow for the Saints, falling behind 4-0 to the Wolverines and needing to battle back midway through the game to take control. A 5-0 run pushed a 15-12 advantage to force a Wesley timeout, eventually holding out for a 25-19 win.
Similar in the second set, the game remained tight until the midway mark when the Saints hit another four-point stretch and held onto a slim lead through the rest. A kill by junior Mykael Johnson ended the close set, 25-23.
With a 2-0 lead in the match, MU still couldn't pull away quickly from Wesley, trailing 11-9 in the third set. However, another powerful push in the middle of the game proved enough for the Saints, using six-consecutive points to put away the set. In the stretch, juniors Myah Cordrey and Alexa Marcum each notched two kills while Johnson added another. The closing three points were all kills by MU, as freshman Elissa Munsterman registered two and junior Michaella Ulses put down one.
Cordrey led the way offensively with a match-high 15 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while Johnson and Ulses added 13 and 10, respectively. Junior Maggie Viniard added a match-high 40 assists, as she crossed the 2,500-assist barrier. She also added 11 digs for another double-double. Junior Jasmine Roy led the defense with a match-high 13 digs.
The Saints will look to finish a perfect league regular season with a rematch of the 2018 Atlantic East Championship on Saturday, October 26, hosting Cabrini University at the Converse Family Fieldhouse. With a win, the Saints will be the top seed in the 2019 league tournament. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
