ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team closed out the 2019 Marymount Invitational on Saturday, defeating Virginia Wesleyan University, 3-1, and Penn State University-Behrend, 3-0, to finish the weekend undefeated at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
Match 1: Marymount 3, Virginia Wesleyan 1
A great start to the day had the Saints topping the Marlins in four sets, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20), led by a strong offensive performance by junior Mykael Johnson with a match-high 19 kills on a .236 hitting percentage.
She was joined in the double-digit kill column by sophomore Caylee Shelton with 13 and freshman Elissa Munsterman with 10. Their consistency spurs from junior Maggie Viniard's setting game, sending out a tied season-best 48 assists in the match, while making it another double-double for the season with 14 digs. Shelton also had a double-double, the first of her career, with 13 digs.
Senior Theresa Buscemi led the defense with a match-high 17 digs, while also joining Viniard with match highs in service aces with four each.
Match 2: Marymount 3, Penn State-Behrend 0
Marymount continued its strong day with the sweep of the Lions (25-18, 25-23, 25-15), as Johnson tacked on another 13 kills to her day.
The Saints grabbed early control in the first set, with a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 lead, which they would hold the rest of the way. The teams battled through the second set, with the Lions taking multiple leads, including 20-17 late in play; Marymount finished on an 8-3 spurt to set up the final frame. The Saints again took a commanding lead, 9-3, in the third set and didn't look back for the win.
Viniard continued to keep the offense flowing with 32 assists, while Buscemi paced the defense with 15 digs.
Viniard was named the tournament MVP for her performance over the weekend, while Cordrey and Shelton joined her on the All-Tournament team.
The Saints will return to play on Friday, October 11 at Swarthmore College; the match is set for 7 p.m.
