Johnson's 12 kills, six blocks lead Saints to first Atlantic East victory of season

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team opened Atlantic East Conference play on Tuesday night at Immaculata University, picking up a 3-0 victory.

Junior Mykael Johnson had the hot hand early, putting down two kills and adding a service ace to lead a 9-2 opening run for the Saints in the first set.

The Mighty Macs fought back to take an 11-10 lead, but a kill from junior Myah Cordrey got the Saints going again. Johnson tallied two-straight kills, while Cordrey put down another to power Marymount back into the lead, 17-13.

The Saints held their advantage from there, for the 25-18 win.

Johnson got up for a block to open the second set, as the Saints took early control onto a 20-4 lead.

Cordrey notched two-straight service aces in the run, while junior Michaella Ulses put down two kills to lead the way.

Immaculata got in rhythm for a 13-4 spurt to cut the Saints' lead down to 24-17, but a Mighty Mac error gave the Saints the 2-0 match lead.

The Mighty Macs opened the third set with a 5-2 lead, but a block and two kills from Johnson got the Saints back within one, 6-5.

Sophomore Caylee Shelton put down two kills, before senior Theresa Buscemi notched an ace, to flip the lead in favor of the Saints, 10-7.

Marymount continued to build its lead, as Cordrey tallied two blocks. She later added two service aces, as the Saints ended the match on a 15-7 run.

Johnson notched three-straight blocks, pairing with Ulses and Cordrey on the second and third, respectively, to keep the momentum going. She added one more kill and one more block in the final moments to take the win.

Johnson finished the match with a team-high 12 kills and six total blocks. Junior Maggie Viniard led the way with 18 assists and tied with junior Alexa Marcum for a team-high 11 digs.

The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday, October 2 at Atlantic East-foe Gwynedd Mercy University, with the match set for 6 p.m.
