NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season on Friday evening in the Captains' Classic at Christopher Newport University, falling to No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 3-0.

Freshman Sophie Meredith put down two kills for the Saints' first points of the match, followed by kills from juniors Myah Cordrey and Mykael Johnson for a 4-3 lead.

Johnson tallied another kill, and Cordrey added a block, as Marymount grabbed an early four-point edge, 10-6.

Following a timeout, the Blugolds came back with a 14-3 run to take the lead, 20-13, before taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the second set, but a block from Meredith and a kill from freshman Elissa Munsterman helped tie the frame, 8-8.

The Blugolds again used a run to build an advantage and take a 16-10 lead, but three-straight kills from Munsterman capped a 7-2 spurt for the Saints to get back within two. However, the Blugolds would hold on to take the two-set lead.

In a back-and-forth start to the third, kills from Johnson and Meredith gave the Saints a slight, 12-11, lead, and the teams found themselves tied, 14-14.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire regained the lead, 21-17, but the Saints, again, fought back to tie the score with a 4-0 run, capped by a Cordrey kill.

The Saints pushed the Blugolds to the limit, 24-23, but the Blugolds were able to grab the final point and take the match.

Johnson, Meredith, and Munsterman all tallied eight kills to tie for the team high, while senior Theresa Buscemi led the defense with 18 digs. Junior Maggie Viniard finished with 27 assists.
