ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount University men's volleyball Head Coach Dan Liberto and women's volleyball junior Maggie Viniard recently traveled to Brazil with USA Sports Tours & Events for the USA DIII Volleyball Teams – Brazil Tour 2019.
The tour took place from June 10-19, with the teams beginning competition on June 12 and 13 in Sao Paulo. On June 14, they traveled to Rio de Janeiro for the Marina Barra Clube International Challenge.
In the International Challenge, the teams, each, played in three matches against the Rio de Janeiro under-22 club teams.
Liberto held the reigns to the men's team, which was comprised of 10 players from seven different Division III schools. Four players were from Continental Volleyball Conference schools.
"It was a great trip," Liberto said. "Including a match against the under-19 Brazil national team at their National Training Center, we got to experience four matches against some great competition."
Viniard earned a spot on the women's team, after earning an American Volleyball Coaches' Association All-America honorable mention selection for the 2018 fall season. She ended the year as the Atlantic East Conference leader with 1066 assists and 10.45 assists per set, earning her the distinction to make her eligible for the team.
"Ever since I was a young player, I have wanted to play internationally, so when I was invited to play, I had to accept," Viniard said. "It was cool because we got to play where the Brazilian national team plays and compete against some Olympic team candidates."
She teamed with nine other student-athletes from five different college and universities.
"It was a lot of fun getting to know and play with other players that I normally play against in our regular season," Viniard added. "Opponents were turned into friends."
