McQueen earns 1,000th point on Senior Day; Saints down Cavaliers, 66-50

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University women's basketball team solidified its spot as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference tournament on Saturday with a 66-50 victory over Cabrini University at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

Before the game the Saints celebrated Senior Day to honor Tyffani McQueen and Abby Fisher. McQueen finished the game with 19 points and, in the process, netted the 1,000th point of her career.

Marymount got off to a hot start, as two layups, each, from McQueen and freshman Katie McShea opened up an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes.

McShea totaled seven points in the opening quarter, as the Saints held a 12-5 lead at the break.

The Saints continued to hold their lead through the second quarter but opened up a double-digit lead through the final five minutes of the half.

Leading 21-15, McQueen converted a layup to begin a 10-1 Marymount run. McShea and McQueen then hit back-to-back three-pointers, before Fisher hit a jumper with one second left to give the Saints a 31-16 halftime lead.

At the half, McShea led the team with 12 points, while McQueen added nine. McShea finished the game with a game-high 23 points.

Fisher hit a layup to push the Saints' lead to 17 points, 40-23 at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter.

Marymount kept its control on the contest, as McQueen's free throws with 1:05 left in the third pushed the score to 50-29.

McQueen's moment came in the fourth quarter, when she forced a turnover, corralled the steal, and drove the length of the court for a layup for her 1,000th points.

The Marymount defense was strong all game, holding the Cavaliers to only 32.7 percent from the field and 21.7 percent from behind the arc, while outrebounding Cabrini 38-29.

Junior Gabriella Haddad led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while McShea pulled down six. McQueen finished with a team-high three steals.

The Saints now look forward to the Atlantic East tournament, which will begin on Monday, February 18. As the tournament's No. 1 seed, Marymount earned a first-round bye and will host a semifinal contest on Wednesday, February 20. Their opponent and the start time are to be determined.
