Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. – Junior Kirsten Campbell and Chloe McAuliffe blasted home a goal apiece to help shoot the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team past Emory & Henry College, 2-1, in the opening night of the SVU Classic on Friday.
The Saints (2-0) came out firing early in the game, getting off three shots before the fourth found the back of the net in the 24th minute. Campbell, who scored both goals in the home opener earlier in the week against Eastern Mennonite University, gave MU its early momentum on the first goal of the night off a perfect pass from McAuliffe.
The lead was short lived, seeing the Wasps draw the score back even at one apiece in the 32nd minute off a deflected shot by Emory & Henry's Sam Sampson.
With time winding down in the first 45, McAuliffe looked to give Marymount back the lead to take in to the half, but Wasps' keeper Kayla Wright pulled in the shot to send the game tied into the break.
McAuliffe carried her attacking mentality into the second half, taking another shot on target just seven minutes into the restart and this time getting it past Wright to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Sending the ball up to McAuliffe was freshman Brooke Hillenbrand, who tallied her first collegiate assist on the goal.
Marymount edged the Wasps in shots for the game, 8-7, putting four on target. Of the seven shots that Emory & Henry attempted, only one was on goal.
The defense for the Saints, led by junior Rebekah Krasinski, didn't allow one corner kick by the Wasps. Senior Erin Harris earned her second win of the season in the net, playing all 90 minutes.
The Saints will be back on the turf again tomorrow for day two of the SVU Classic, as they take on Ferrum College. The last time the two met was in 2011 at the Bridgewater Invitational with Marymount taking a 3-1 victory. First touch is set for 5 p.m.
