Baseball splits twin bill on road at York

YORK, Pa.— The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team split in a Capital Athletic Conference nine-inning twin bill with York College of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, falling in a walkoff in the opener before rallying from a five-run deficit in game two.

Game 1: York 5, Marymount 4

Freshman Kenny Sysyn took the mound for game one, holding the Spartans off the board through the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, York managed to add three runs to the scoreboard. YC struck again in the bottom of the fourth, posting one more run before Marymount answered, 4-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Saints went to work on the offensive end, registering two runs, 4-2. Senior Marlon Mitchell started the inning off with a single to third base, followed by sophomore Ryan Scheufele reaching on a walk. Senior Lorenzo Calderon laid down a bunt and York committed a throwing error, allowing Mitchell to score and Scheufele and Calderon to advance an extra base. Senior Brandon Savage sent a sacrifice line drive to right field, scoring Scheufele for the second run of the inning.

Marymount's defense and pitching kept York off the scoreboard for several more innings before going back to work in the top of the ninth. Savage dropped a homerun over the right field fence to open the inning, 4-3. Senior Karlis Graubics reached first on a York error. Graubics later stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. With Graubics in scoring position, junior Javier Herrera stepped up to the plate and fired a shot to right field, tying the game at four all.

Marymount's last-ditch effort wasn't enough, and the Saints fell short after the Spartans struck one last time in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.

Game 2: Marymount 6, York 5

In game two, senior Spenser Davis went to work on the mound, striking out a batter and forcing two fly outs to keep York scoreless in the first inning. The Spartan offense came alive in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. Marymount allowed one more run in the bottom of the third, falling behind 5-0.

Both squads remained scoreless until the Saints broke the silence in the top of the seventh. Graubics reached first on a single to right field and senior Roy Coates sent a ball down the right field line for a triple and RBI, 5-1. Scheufele brought Coates in on a single to right field. Later in the inning, Scheufele and sophomore Conner Hall got in scoring position. Scheufele reached home on a wild pitch, and Hall scored following a throwing error by the catcher, 5-4.

A late push by the Saints gave Marymount a 6-5 advantage at the top of the eighth. Senior Brandon Orbe and Coates each recorded an RBI to pull the Saints ahead. Hall recorded three strikeouts on the mound in the bottom of the eighth to keep YC off the board, and pitched another no hitter in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for the Saints, 6-5.

The men's squad will host Salisbury University in another CAC matchup on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., at Bishop O'Connell High School.
